RES Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Are you in 4th or 5th grade?

Are you a voracious Reader?

Do you excel at games like Jeopardy?

Do you love competition?

.....then the Reading Bowl is for you!

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB) is a quiz-bowl competition covering the books nominated for the Georgia Children's Book Award for that school year.  It is offered to 4th and 5th graders.

The competition was created by Helen Ruffin, a media specialist in Dekalb County.  She served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children’s Book Award nominee program. This literature program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia’s College of Education. This literature program inspired her to use the nominee books to encourage her students to read.

The "bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz bowl-like format.  There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process.

Students will be required to read the Georgia Children’s Book Award Finalists.  They will also meet weekly during lunchtime to discuss the books they are reading.

**Notice to Parents**

The Reading Bowl Books contain a lot of heavy content and can be very emotional for students.  Some topics they may read about, but are not limited to are suicide, death, relationship issues, tragedy, and other sensitive social issues.  The Reading Bowl books are Georgia Book Award nominees for the upcoming year and often push the boundaries of children literature. So, please be aware that your child may have questions when reading these books.
